The equipment you buy will depend on the outcome you want to achieve.
If you are interested in improving your cardiovascular fitness, then it is worth investing in a good quality bike, elliptical trainer or treadmill that will stand the test of time. For around $1000, we would recommend:

- The Nautilus E616 Elliptical retails at around $650. It packs in 25 different resistance levels and has 29 in-built programs, so it really is suitable for everyone, from complete beginner or someone who likes more of a challenge. Of course, one major advantage of an elliptical trainer over a treadmill is that there is far less impact on the joints, bones and ligaments. Secondly, elliptical trainers, especially those that allow the upper body to push and pull, tend to burn significantly more calories that bikes.

If your budget cannot stretch that far, then these are good options that cost considerably less (under $500):

This product would be ideal for those looking to warm up before a weights session or those who want to walk or power-walk to improve their fitness levels.
- The Schwinn A40 Elliptical Machine is a great budget option between $400 and $500. It is simple, light, and very quiet but gets really great reviews!

Muscle Tone and Definition
If you want to tone, bulk or define the muscles, then weights are the way to go! There are a number of options depending on how much space you have and your budget. Undoubtedly, you will get the best results if you invest in the following equipment set which will allow you to do all the most recognised and useful weight training exercises such as squats, bench presses, deadlifts and pull-ups:
A Barbell: an Olympic Bar: An Olympic Bar is a 7 foot barbell, onto which you can attach weight plates at each end (secured by a collar). This is one item where quality is important. Cheap brands can bend over time and will need to be replaced as you start to lift heavier weights. We would recommend the
Weights for the Olympic Bar (Bumper Plates): For the weights they are generally sold in pairs. You will need up to about 150kg /320lbs to start off of mixed weights.
Power Rack: This is fundamental for doing bench presses and squats safely, and importantly, will allow you to lift heavier weights. The bars on the cage will stop the weight collapsing on you. You need a power rack that is robust and solid. Look for one that you attach pull-up bars to so you can work the back and bicep muscles to balance out chest and tricep exercises.
Bench: A flat bench is needed for doing bench presses. Ideally, purchase one that is adjustable (inclines and declines) so you can work both upper and lower pecs. The bench also comes in useful for other exercises such as tricep dips, split squats, decline press-ups and bunny hops.
Adjustable Dumbbells. While they are slightly more expensive than regular dumbbells a good set of adjustable dumbbells such as Ironmaster adjustable weights will give years of use. Dumbbells are essential for working out the smaller muscles, or if you are tight for space and can’t fit in a full size bar.
Dumbbells. A good quality set of dumbbells will last years. Dumbbells can be used to work the arms, back and chest in exercises such as bicep raises, overhead presses, one arm rows and chest flyes. Sets of 3 or 4 will usually save you money, but it can be quite difficult to determine what weights you will need. Here are our recommendations:
Women beginners = 2, 4 and 6 KG
Women advanced = 6, 8 and 10 KG
Men beginners = 8, 10 and 12 KG
Men advanced = 12, 14 and 16 KG
Men bodybuilding = 16, 20 and 24 KG
Body Weight Machine: This might not be an essential item but a lot of programs call for body weight exercises such as dips and chin ups. The chin ups can be done on the Power Rack, but a body weight machine will be great for leg rises and dips. A great alternative is the TRX system for body weight exercises.
Multi-Gyms: Multi-gyms are quite expensive, heavy and cumbersome, but sometimes this could be the only product you need to work all the major muscles of the body. For beginners who have not had instruction and coaching in strength-training may find themselves drawn towards a multi-gym set-up as opposed to a rack, dumbbell and weight set-up. Floor Mat: Mat for floor protection, especially if you are in a garage with concrete floor. A non slip mat will allow you to do stretches, body-weight exercises and abdominal exercises in comfort. Interlocking mats are the best type of flooring, providing support, protection and insulation.

They are 7 foot long and need at least a foot of clearance at either end. If you do the maths then you need at least 9 foot of space for these to go in.g weights then I would recommend using free weights rather than a machine. The foundation of any gym is the bar. You can work out your whole body with just an Olympic bar and a few plates. When you start out the bar might not be baring much weight, but overtime its going to increase and you need to buy a bar that’s ready for this.

Yes, we have gone for two options here. First is the incredibly popular Bowflex 552 Adjustable Dummbells. These are the biggest selling adjustable dumbbells on the market, rightly so they are safe and easy to use, the weights can be changed in seconds. However they do have a couple of drawbacks. First their weight limit is only 52lbs. Second they are not as rugged as the Ironmasters.
