So you want to use an exercise bike to lose weight?

So you want to use an exercise bike to lose weight? When I was growing up, I lived next door to a guy who must have weighed nearly 300lbs.  Its a sad tale because his wife left him so he decided to get in shape.  We lived in a remote village and he was away on work alot so he decided simply to use an exercise bike to lose weight.

Of course that’s not all he did, he ate well and reduced is calorie intake.  What helped was the bike riding.

Now my neighbour was well off, director of a medium sized company, big car house the works.  He could have bought the best bike on the market.  But no, he went for one of the cheapest ones that he could find.  Something like Exerpeutic Upright Bike, which costs less than $200.:

How he did it

He rode this bike every day, day in day out.  At the time I was at university, so I knew nothing of this.  I had left my neighbour in the summer and didn’t return home for nearly 9 months!  As you can imagine when I got home it was something of a shock to me.  You see he came round the house to pick something up, and when I answered the door he was unrecognisable.  His weight had gone from 300lbs to 130lbs, he had halved his weight using an exercise bike.

Now this story is 100% true.  However it is not a path that Sheona or I would recommend.  While it is possible to lose 2lbs a week, this is not a safe way to manage it.  If your weight drops this fast then you are putting your body into starvation mode, your body will be burning muscle along with fat.  It will also put your heart under great strain.

If you do want to lose weight then an exercise bike is one of the best tools you have have.  Its convenient, and products like the exerpeutic upright bike can fold away when not in use.  Also if you are a little heavy then its a good low impact workout that will minimise stress on the joints.

Do I just need to use an exercise bike to lose weight?

Combine your cycling with a low calorie diet and your pounds will fall off, it will take a little discipline to eat right.  If you can do it then go the whole way and manage everything you eat to keep your calories below 1500 (for a woman) and 2000 (for a man).  This can be a challenge so anther option is to look at what you are eating in the day.  Cut out Soda, eating between meals and sugary foods and this will cut your cravings.  Eat a light breakfast, a low carbohydrate lunch and a sensible dinner and you will be well on the way to losing those pounds.

So what happened to my neighbour?

Well after he lost the weight he had an operation to take in his “apron” the loose skin left behind.  The weight stayed off, due to his diet and he met  a new woman.  So it ended happily ever after.  All a result of using an exercise bike to lose weight and a bit of sensible eating.
