What makes the Schwinn 870 Treadmill Tick?

If you are familiar with the Schwinn 830 then you will see there is some similarity with a little more emphasis on power and speed! The key changes are the upgrade of the motor, resulting in a bigger incline being achieved.  There are also a few other benefits that are listed in full below.

Powerful Motor

The Schwinn is equipped with a 3.0 CHP (continuous horsepower motor).  This has enough juice to propel walkers, joggers and runners comfortably at up to 12 mph.  Schwinn are confident of its performance, and back it with a reassuring 10 year.

Full Sized Running Track

The Proform has a high quality extended 20″ X 60″ 2-PLY Commercial grade tread belt.  This gives plenty of space for even tall runners to stretch their legs.  This is the lowest cost option for someone looking for this size of treadmill belt.  For example the Profrom 995i costs nearly $150 more and has the same grade belt.

Under the track are 6 cells of cushioning. This is exactly what you need to soak up the jolts through your legs as you run.  It also means much less noise and vibration coming through.  So no bothering the neighbours or family as you workout!

Clear and Simple Console

The console is clear and easy to use, with intuitive buttons.  It features a built in fan, and some reasonably good quality speakers.  Our research has discovered that these are among best speakers to be found on a treadmill!  We love the builtin iPad holder, and the big cup holders are perfect for keeping hydrated.

My Fitness Pal

This is the Ace card from Schwinn, and is one of our favourite features.  The treadmill will connect to MyFitnessPal, via the free SchwinnConnect service.

The objective of MyFitnessPal is to motivate you to loose weight and exercise, it stores all your workout details, and off sets calories you have burned against the calories you have eaten that day to give an estimate of how much weight you will lose.

By far the best feature are results sharing, through MFP you can add friends and see how your performance measures up.  That gives a huge incentive to run more!

A good range of 26 modes give a range of calorie burning workouts:

• 5 Weight Control,

These will ensure that you get better and faster quicker.

Assembly

This is a very simple machine to put together, just assemble the frame and attach it to the running base you should allow about 2 hours start to finish and have an extra pair of hands to help.  You could pay someone to do it, it will cost about $100, but its easy enough that you can save the money and manage it yourself.

One advantage of building the machine yourself is to know how to maintain it.  If you find the belt slipping (which is normal) you will need to apply some treadmill lubricant.  This requires the belt to be loosened to access the deck.

What do other reviews say about the Schwinn 870 treadmill?

The original 995 had over 100 reviews at 4 out of 5 stars, this is a great treadmill for the home.

A couple of issues are its size, it is quite heavy and will take a couple of people to assemble.  Also there can be problems initially setting up the iFit module.  This is just part of the set up, once up and running its no problem.

Any downsides to this machine?

Not really, this treadmill has it all.  It is quite a simple build, but with the weight it is hard work to put together.  But once its in then you will have a great time running through the programs.  The other is that you will need to maintain the belt with occasional lubrication.  Given that this can really push your fitness along, it is far cheaper than a gym membership.

Our experience with the treadmill has not revealed any issues.  However some users have reported reliability issues.  Given the thousands of treadmills sold these complaints are in the minority.  The main issue was with the software, and Nautilus have updated the firmware of the devices to fix this.

The other issue is the pricing.  The “RSP” is listed at $1800.  Schwinn always mark up the price to come down and 99% of the time this treadmill is available at under $900, if it is then its worth picking up.  Sometimes they take the offer off, so just watch out for that.

This is a full on running machine for much less than $1000.  With MFP connectivity you can now easily record your progress, and even manage your weight loss. In turn this will make your want to get more use from your treadmill and keep the motivation up!

You should consider this if you are after a safe, solid treadmill.  If you are looking to add more volume and miles to your workout there are few better choices for under $1000.
