Why would you want a Treadmill Desk?

Researchers have long known about the advantages of physical exercise on health and mental wellbeing.  Its not surprising that using a treadmill at work has become increasingly popular.  When I was speaking to the marketing manager at Lifespan they were saying that all their business growth has come from office based desk treadmills.  Often big brands will offer an integrated desk / treadmill package.  These can end up costing thousands of pounds,  this is because they the fitness companies offer big discounts to business filling offices with large numbers of these machines.

For the consumer trying to find the right combination of desk and treadmill that works for you can be difficult.  If you already have your favourite treadmill then you should be able to simply fit this desk in front of the console, with all the controls still visible.

With all the medical advise saying that walking 10,000 steps a day cutting the chance of type 2 diabetes by 50% and strokes by 70% its clear that getting to to 10,000 steps is a great way of keeping healthy.

Main Features of the TrekDesk Treadmill Desk:

Since the arrival of the TrekDesk back in 2008 many competitors have arrived on the market, however for us few of them touch the features offered by the TrekDesk, especially for the price of less than $500.

Huge Desk Space

The feature that we really love is the huge desk space offered by the TrekDesk, by wrapping round your body everything is within easy.  This is really important as it allows you to move things about the desk without having to risk stepping off the treadmill to pick something that may be out of reach. As you can see in the image working within the gap keeps you orientated while you pace out the steps.  Overall the desk measures 74 inches by 34 inches.

Comfortable Working Position

I often find that desks are never really the right height for me.  Fortunately the height of this desk is easily adjusted to fit your needs.  The manufacture claims a height limit of about 5’4″ to 6’4″. Since I am 5’11” it was a good fit for me, if you need to check firs though the hight of the desk is adjustable from 46.5 to 56.5 inches.  With the layout its easy to maintain a comfortable walking speed of about 2mph while working away. With the size of the desk there were no issues with storing everything that is needed for a days work.  The strong legs provide a stable working platform that does not shift while working.

Portable and Easy to Store

A great feature of this desk is that its easy to fold up and put away.  This is great if you want to run on your treadmill.  Most dedicated treadmills with integrated desks have a limited top speed.  However you can use this desk on full running machines, so long as they can run at about 2-3 MPH.  When you are done working and walking then you can get the heart working with a full speed workout with your arms moving comfortably.  This is a great feature and lets you get the most out of your treadmill.

Desk Strength

The worktop is durable thick plastic that feels good, and is supported by solid steel legs.  Weighing in at 57lbs the desk feels solid and when working at it there is little wobble or movement.  Overall there is a useful 52lb weight capacity on the desktop.  We had no issues with the strength and stability of the TrekDesk Treadmill Desk.

Installation

There is a small amount of set up involved with the TrekDesk, and takes no more than an hour.  You will need a small drill to make an attachment, but all the other tools are included.  You will not have to disassemble your existing treadmill to fit this unit over the top.

Any difficulties using this desk?

There are a couple of things to look out for.  First the dimensions, it is quite a large work area, and not designed to fit into very tight spaces.

Due to its design you will be further back on your treadmill than you are used to.  Because you should just be walking while working at the desk this should not be a problem, however it can be a little strange at first seeing the console so far away.

Finally you will need to reach across the desk to reach the treadmill controls.  Some treadmills come with remote controls that will make this easier.  So long as you have a little space under your monitor you should not have any problems controlling the treadmill though.
