Sitting in the middle of the Livestrong Elliptical range the LS13.0E-2 balances price with features. We recently reviewed the entry level Livestrong LS8.0 here, and the top of the range Livestrong LS15.0E-2 here.

While all the machines are based on the same frame, under the skin there are some big differences. We will see if the LS13.oE-2 is worth the extra money.

The e-2 designation shows that this is the newer model of the LS13.0E model line. Most of the differences are cosmetic, however there were some nice improvements to the features of the screen/console which let the old model down.

At about $1,200 this elliptical is a mid tier model, and we would expect it to stand up against competition from the like of the Sole Fitness E35, itself a capable machine

Livestrong went back to basics when they designed their range of ellipticals.  They use a system that is designed to produce the most ergonomic training platform they can using the following 6 principles.  As these are what makes the elliptical what it is lets look at them in detail.

Body Positioning: With the handles are directly above the foot pads, forcing you to ride in a strong upright position.  You won’t be able to slouch on this machine, which will ensure that you engage your full core muscles during the training.

Handlebar Spacing:  The handlebars feature long grips extending down the top of the handle.  This gives a good comfortable reach no matter your height.

Elliptical foot path: Key to safe comfortable workout is the path that the pedals take.  With a 20″ stride there is enough space, and with the well thought out curve of the path it is very comfortable.

Pedal Placement:  To minimise strain on the hips the pedals have been placed as close together as possible.  This stops a lateral side to side motion, and allows a more natural up down movement of the legs.

Access: This is a front drive elliptical, meaning that the business end (fly wheel / motor etc) are located in front of the driver.  This makes accessing the elliptical easy as there is nothing to step over.

Drive: With a well balanced 30lb fly wheel the movement is smooth and fluid.  With no jerks to the motion.

Other Features:

Flywheel

With its 30lbs flywheel, this elliptical has all the power needed to provide a challenging workout. this is acceptable for an elliptical in this price range.  Larger fly wheels (30lbs+) provide a smoother ride but cost more to support.  At level the 30lbs just pips the Sole E35 which narrowly misses at 29lbs.

Incline

Both the Sole and Livestrong feature adjustable inclines.  The Livestrong can go through 30 degrees, with the level of incline being controlled via the convenient buttons on the handles.

Console

Livestrong Fitness LS13.0E-2 Elliptical Trainer Console

The console has been significantly upgraded from the earlier version.  With a bold clear screen, up to 8.5″ it is easy to read and shows all the data you can need during the workout:  Distance (around the running track), heart rate, speed, RPM etc.

Its buttons are also hugely improved, with the easy to reach fan and volume controls.

The console also provides access to the workout programs, these are great fun and easy to follow:  Workouts manual, Weight loss Muscle toner, Strength builder, Constant watts, Mellow Johnny’s Trail, Climb, Descent, Max cardio, The Tour, Plus two custom programs

Warranty

The LS13.03-2 has a nice bump to the warranty over the smaller LS8.0e and comes with

  • Frame: Lifetime
  • Parts: Five years
  • Labor: Two years

What are others saying about the Livestrong LS13.0E-2 Elliptical

All the Livestrong Ellipticals are well regarded, and this is no exception.  Receiving a strong 4 out of 5 stars.  This model is new to the market and is been well received.

“I considered the Sole E35 and the Xterra FS5.8E, but settled on the Livestrong based on reviews, features, and aesthetics (price was the same for all). “

James’ Buying Tip:

This Elliptical shares the same frame as the more expensive model, the LS15.0e-2. They may have more in the way of flywheel weight and technology, but the ride is the same high quality.

Summary

This $1200-$1300 price bracket has a good deal of competition.  Both Schwinn and Sole have great ellipticals at this price.  I really like the Schwinn 470, but personally this model in its revamped E2 version wins out on the aesthetics and features.  For us the Livestrong LS13.0E2 is the best allround elliptical trainer you can buy.
